Associate Content Manager

Do you have a way with written words – no, we don’t just mean that you can write; we mean, you make sentences sing, like “Hallelujah Chorus” sing? And a way to think visually to make the structure of those words come to life on a page or screen? The associate content manager will manage several concurrent custom magazine projects (primarily), as well as digital blog sites from start to finish. Almost all projects will focus on travel/destination content for our clients who are some of the biggest and most notable names in the hospitality industry (hotels, DMOs, and ski resorts). You’ll come up with story ideas based on client objective, craft and refine stories with writers, work directly with layout designers to make it all look its best, and generally shepherd the content through to a finished project that would make your mom proud. Like hang-on-the-mantle proud.


FYI: Start date for this position is expected to be August/September.


What You Will Be Doing:

  • Serve as the primary client contact and content team manager on several concurrent custom magazine and destination blog website projects.
  • Develop story ideas and editorial lineups directly with clients to blend their marketing objectives with the kind of editorial chops that will keep leisure travelers engaged.
  • Report and write stories for custom magazines and destination blog sites.
  • Assign and content edit stories submitted by both internal writers and freelancers.
  • Work together with layout designers and photo editors to make each story looks its absolute best.
  • Additional responsibilities may include loading content into websites, writing and execution of other content marketing projects, research projects, and fact checking.


What You Need for this Position:

  • 2+ years in journalism or communications field, preferably some in magazine publishing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications field.
  • Expert-level written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience building editorial concepts where the visual end product is king.
  • An unwavering commitment to deadlines.
  • Solid grasp of SEO and keyword principles as it relates to writing for the web.
  • Working understanding of WordPress, keyword tools, and Adobe Creative Cloud (primarily InDesign).
  • Experience and expertise in skiing and/or snowboarding a plus.
  • Bonus points: experience with Salesforce.
  • Ability to work independently and the demonstrated attention to detail to juggle multiple projects, tasks, and deadlines.
  • Ability to work in our Portsmouth, New Hampshire, office.

Content Writing Internship

Hawthorn Creative is always looking to pay it forward to young professionals looking to break into the industry. Primary responsibilities include writing for both print and web, blogging, SEO analysis, article and industry research, fact checking, and assisting with marketing initiatives, like e-mail campaigns.

Graphic Design Internship

We are looking for an intern for 16 hours per week to assist in supporting our design team with various duties, including production, image cropping, file management, and photo research. Candidate must have solid technical skills in Photoshop and InDesign, as well as a positive attitude and strong work ethic.


This internship is unpaid; however, you will be doing actual work that our designers do currently and not fetching coffee. If you like to work hard and want to learn skills you will actually use in the job force, this is the internship for you.


Requirements: must be enrolled in or have graduated from an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program in Graphic Design.
